Our commitment to the best quality products has been the recipe for our success. We offer British prime quality sustainable cod, haddock and plaice and mainly cook our fish to order so you get it at it’s best. Our potato chips are washed, peeled and cut each day to guarantee freshness. Traditional fish and chips provide a great source of nutrition and are environmentally friendly.
We Support the Environment
Because we care about the environment we only buy wild fish from well managed fishing grounds in the Barents Sea and Iceland. Virtually all fish and chip shops in the UK use frozen at sea fillets and we are no exception. FAS fish guarantees freshness, being frozen within hours of the fish being caught, as well as the certainty that it has been caught within scientifically proven criteria for sustainability, so you really can eat cod with a clear conscience.
As well as Britain’s favourites cod and haddock, we also offer plaice and have also recently introduced mackerel to the menu to encourage healthy eating and support Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall in the great Fish Fight.
We also support the Marine Conservation Society, the UK charity for the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. And all our food is locally sourced wherever possible.
Health Benefits of Fish and Chips
Fish and chips are a valuable source of protein, fibre, iron and vitamins, providing a third of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins for men and nearly half for women. Compared to other fast food a fish and chip dinner is often the healthiest choice. On average, it contains a third fewer calories and over forty per cent less fat than dishes such as burgers, donner kebabs, chicken korma or cheese and tomato pizza. (Source: Seafish). In addition, potato chips are an excellent source of vitamin C.
Our Quality Control
We insist that the food we buy is of the highest quality and this is our first priority. Every morning potatoes are rumbled which is a special process to get the surface perfectly primed for cooking. We only use vegetable oil free from additives, low in Trans fats, contain no hydrogenated fats and no nut produce. Our oil is replaced continuously and maintained at the correct temperature.
Flavour and Nutritional Value of Fish
Cod remains the number one choice of the great British public. We love its delicious flaky white flesh, mild flavour and low fat content. Cod liver oil is packed with vitamins A and D, plus omega-3 fatty acids which are known to play an essential part in maintaining good health.
Haddock, another lean white marine fish, is a superb source of protein. Similar to cod but haddock is less flaky but has a slightly sweet taste that makes it very popular. It contains a significant amount of vitamin B12, pyridoxine and selenium as well as a healthy balance of potassium and sodium.
Plaice is a type of flatfish that has soft flesh and a mild buttery flavour with a slight hint of sweetness. Rich in vitamin B12, plaice is also a good source of vitamins A and D, as well as those important omega-3 fatty acids.
Mackerel contains selenium, vitamin B12 and niacin, and is also low in sodium. We should all be eating more oily fish as it is a more concentrated source of omega-3 essential fatty acids.
